PROGRESS THROUGH JULYProgress through June

Over the last month, work has involved pavement construction, bridge upgrades, service protections, and various retaining walls. The daytime safe work zones were extended overnight on Wednesday 29 July, with the median safe work zone now in place between Hill Road and the Pahurehure Inlet.

Hill Road to the Takanini Interchange:

Despite the wet weather, the Southern Corridor Improvements Team has made steady progress over the last month. Work has included pavement construction, bridge upgrades, services protections, and various retaining walls in the areas below:

Alfriston Road to the Takanini Interchange:

  • In the median between Alfriston Road and the Takanini Interchange, the lower (granular) pavement layers were laid.
  • Earthworks and drainage installation continued along the median and the southbound shoulder of the motorway. This included shaping of the new open channels (as known as swales) which help treat stormwater as it runs off the motorway.
  • Between Hill Road and Alfriston Road, old median barriers, grass, and topsoilSub-base materials were removedimported to enable the construction of new pavement layers.median in preparation for the first asphalt layer.

Takanini Interchange to Pahurehure Inlet:

  • Drainage installation continuedbegan along the southbound shoulder of the motorway. This included shaping of the new open channels (as known as swales) which help treat stormwater as it runs off the motorway.
  • Vegetation was removed and mulched on the shoulder along the southbound side of the motorway.
  • Bulk earthworks continued to shape the area for the new pavement and drainage.

  • On the Papakura Bridge, just north of the railway line, ongoing substructureline, we continued constructing the footings, and poured the northbound and southbound centre piers. Piling work continued.has been completed for the southbound widening.
  • Constructed northbound access to the Papakura Bridge structures.
  • Work continued to excavate and soil nail at the abutments under bridges crossing the railway line and along the southbound off-ramp towards Spartan Road.
  • Work continued on the placement of precast retaining wall panels and the reinforcing cage for the northern abutment ofnearest the Spartan Road Bridge.
  • Continued offsite precasting components for retaining walls, noise walls, and bridges.

Over the next month, we willmonth, we will extend the median work zone north to Hill Road, and continue working in the median and shoulders between HillAlfriston Road and the Pahurehurethe Pahurehure Inlet. We will also continue working on the foundations to widen the motorway bridges over the Papakura Stream, and the KiwiRailKiwi Rail Lines. In the office, long term planning is underway for future work areas to be established, including works around major utilities such as gas, water, and power main lines. Work this month includes:

  • Asphalt operations will commence inIn the median area between Alfriston Road and the Takanini Interchange.Interchange, asphalt layers will be going in to form the pavement and new concrete barriers will be constructed.
  • Slip-forming concrete barriers will follow immediately after asphalting operations.
  • Between Hill Road and Alfriston Road, we will begin removing the old median barriers and installing new barriers to create safe work zones.

  • OverDrainage work will continue along the next two weeks, temporary guard railing is being installed onsouthbound shoulder of the left hand sidemotorway. This includes shaping of the northbound motorway to create a safe work zone. Environmental clearancenew open channels (as known as swales) which will be obtained prior to tree removal.help treat stormwater as it runs off the motorway.
  • Bulk earthworks will continue to shape the area for the new pavement and drainage.
  • In the median area, base and asphalt layers will be going in to form the pavement.

  • On the Papakura Bridge, just north of the railway line, substructure work is ongoing.
  • At bridges crossing the railway line and along the southbound off-ramp towards Spartan Road, work will continue to excavate and soil nail at the abutments.  
  • We will continue offsite precasting components for noise walls, retaining walls, and bridges.
  • Work will continue on the placement of precast retaining wall panels nearest the Spartan Road Bridge.
  • Across the project, long term environmental controls are being installed to maintain water quality during construction.construction work.

 

It is important that motorists keep to the 80 km/h speed limit80km/h speed limit past our work areas. There will be ongoing truck and project vehicle movements accessing the shoulder and the median work sites. Keeping both motorists and our team members as safe as possible is imperative and we need everyone'severyone’s help to do this.
