The  Quay St Cyclewaycycleway is the first cycleway in Auckland to have an electronic counter showing the number of users and was opened on 8 July by Prime Minister John Key, Transport Minister Simon Bridges and Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

National Cycling Manager Dougal List says the counter is a great addition to the Auckland City Centre network, “an average of 500 trips per day in the middle of winter is a fantastic start, and it will only grow as the cycleway connects up with other major cycleway projects including the Nelson St cycleway.”

The two way, on-road cycleway, which goes from Princes St to Plumer St, is protected from traffic by concrete separators and planter boxes. It is part of the city centre cycle network which includes Beach Rd Cycleway, Grafton Gully Cycleway, Lightpath and Nelson St Cycleway. This network of cycleways, once complete, will see the city become more connected making it easier for people to cycle into and around the city centre.

Quay St Cycleway was delivered by Auckland Transport with funding from the Transport Agency, the Government and Auckland Council through the Urban Cycleways Programme.

The number of people cycling into Auckland city centre has doubled over the past three years.
