RolloverThe Transport Agency, Road Transport Forum and its member associations have prepared the Rollover Prevention Safer Journeys Workshop to help drivers and those who work in the industry understand why rollovers occur and how to prevent them.

On average a truck rolls over every two to three days on New Zealand roads, a statistic which is double the OECD average on a per capita basis and is truly alarming, according to Road Transport Forum Chief Executive Ken Shirley.

“The goal of the Rollover Prevention Programme series is to ensure that every truck driver in New Zealand returns home safely after work. We strongly urge all transport operators, drivers, fleet managers and other staff to attend at least one of these workshops in 2016.”

The workshops discuss the fundamentals of vehicle stability and how it is affected by the size and type of load and other factors such as the nature of the road and weather conditions. Details of where the workshops will be held are available from the Road Transport Forum, and anyone interested in hosting a workshop in their region should email forum@rtf.nz.

In addition to the tragedy of death and serious injury from truck rollover the vehicle damage, product loss and supply chain disruption costs the freight industry and the country millions of dollars each year.

“Knowing how to prevent truck rollover is an important part of being a professional driver,” says Harry Wilson, Freight Portfolio Director at the Transport Agency. “A better understanding of the factors behind rollover will help make our roads safer.”

More information on how to prevent truck rollover is available on the Transport Agency’s website
