The NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport welcomes feedback from the community on proposals to reduce the legal speed limits approaching the State Highway 1, Puhoi Road intersection. The Transport Agency and Auckland Transport have been requested by the local community to formally review the legal speed limits at these locations. The formal review undertaken by the Transport Agency and Auckland Transport supports the proposed lower speed limits as being both safe and appropriate for people living and travelling along these roads.
Consultation will take place between 27 June 2017 - 30 July 2017.
There are two proposed speed limit changes along State Highway 1 and Puhoi Road.
Proposed changes - Puhoi Road
- A proposed new speed limit for Puhoi Road of 80km/h, starting from SH1 for 450m up to the 50km/h zone in Puhoi village. The proposed 80km/h is a reduction from the current legal limit of 100km/h.
- The speed reduction to 80km/h is required due to the increased amount of traffic travelling this stretch of road and the approach to the busy intersection with SH1.
Proposed changes - State Highway 1
- An extension of the 80km/h speed limit through Johnstones Hill tunnel, to end 350m north of the Puhoi Road intersection. The proposed 80km/h extension is a reduction from the current legal limit of 100km/h.
- There have been a high number of crashes and near misses at this intersection. Reducing the speed to 80km/h from 100km/h through this section of highway will allow more time for safe turning off and onto SH1.
The Transport Agency and Auckland Transport are consulting on these proposals and if acceptable to the public will set the new speed limits by making a bylaw, in accordance with Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2003 .
